Marilyn Monroe’s “Niagara”

    A list of movies filmed in or about Niagara Falls just isn’t complete without the 1953 movie Niagara.

    A raging torrent of emotion that even nature can’t control!

    The movie stars Marilyn Monroe, Joseph Cotten, and Jean Peters.

    The movie was filmed right in Niagara Falls, Ontario and there are literally dozens if not hundreds of scenes where you get a glimpse of the Falls. Here are some scenes that are a little more noteworthy:

    There is a nice shot of the American Falls with a rainbow.

    The main character George Loomis (played by Joseph Cotten) is shown walking below the American Falls while he does a voice over.

    The Rainbow Cabins are shown. They are located right across from the river from the American Falls.

    There is a nice aerial shot of all 3 falls as well as Oakes Garden.

    The previous shot pans left and shows the Rainbow Bridge with its bell tower.

    A honeymooning couple takes an incline railcar down to the Maid of Mist.
    The Maid of the Mist is shown. It is the “most famous boat in America”.

    They go on Maid of the Mist No. 2. There are a lot of nice scenes of the boat and the Falls.

    The go into the Scenic Tunnel (now Journey Behind The Falls).

    This scene shows nice shots of them down on the platform near the base of the Horseshoe Falls.

    The Scenic Tunnel ticket is shown on screen. Admission was $1.00.

    We see the American Falls illuminated through their cabin window.

    This short scene shows the Whirlpool Aero Car and the Whilrpool below.

    This is a lengthy scene by the American Falls at the Cave of the Winds.

    Some of the characters are on a boat in the upper Niagara River.

    They stop to get gas in “this little Canadian town of Chippawa. Great Revolutionary War battles. The British Whipped us”

    Two characters are in the drift above the Falls.

    George goes over the Falls. The effect looks poor given today’s standards, but it was probably quite good for its time.
